Edition 188 - Norman Shreeve, non-medallist Olympians
The past 2 weeks have been quite a wash. I had high fever on 1 day and my platelets began dipping for 6 days straight, going below 100,000. That meant I didn’t run at all or do any other exercise for a week. That’s a very long time for someone who leans on running for mental health maintenance. Things are better now and I aim to pick things up as we go.
Among others, I am looking forward to a trip to Satara next weekend when I intend to race a popular half marathon.
I loved this story of someone whose marathon time is almost as the current best national athletes in India. And Norman is not East African, has a full time job as a doctor with the NHS and hence doesn’t exactly sleep 8+ hrs a day every day. Amazing story made even more incredible by the fact that he ran 2:19:xx for a marathon in the same year that he had a stroke!
If you aren’t having withdrawal symptoms from Paris yet, here’s a lovely article with perspectives from multiple Olympians - some of whom never medalled. I loved what Bruno Fratus had to say in particular.
Hope those are enough treats for this week. Have a great weekend!
